SK Rapid Wien says goodbye to key player
SK Rapid Wien is losing one of its most promising talents. Moroccan midfielder Mohamed Chouiar has opted for a move to an Italian Serie A club, leaving the Austrian Bundesliga side after just one season in Hütteldorf.
The 24-year-old attacking midfielder, signed from a French second-tier club in summer 2025, impressed in 28 Bundesliga matches with four assists. His contract with Rapid ran until 2027, but the club confirmed on Tuesday that a mutual termination had been agreed.
Why the departure hurts Rapid Wien
Chouiar was one of the few bright spots in a disappointing season. His pace and passing created consistent danger in the opposition’s final third. He particularly shone in the derbies against Austria Wien, providing an assist and scoring in the first leg.
But the club couldn’t resist the pressure from the Italian outfit. Sources in Milan report a concrete offer of €2.5 million in compensation, which Rapid ultimately accepted. Financial considerations played a role, as the club needed to restructure its wage budget.
What’s next for SK Rapid Wien?
The search for a suitable replacement starts immediately. Sporting director Stefan Ebner confirmed that talks are already underway with several European clubs. Priority is a player with a similar profile – a technically gifted midfielder who can operate as a No. 10 or on the wings.
For the fans, the hope remains that the new signing will quickly make them forget the loss. After all, Rapid kicks off the new season on July 19, 2026 with a friendly against SC Wiener Neustadt. The preparation must now proceed without Chouiar, but the squad still has enough quality for a fresh start.
